Gustavus Adolphus College is a private liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America located in St. Peter, which is a city in the US state of Minnesota, serving as the county seat of Nicollet County, with a population of nearly 9800 inhabitants, according to the 2000 census.
The college was established in 1862, as a Lutheran parochial school at Red Wing, by Eric Norelius, pastor, first starting as Minnesota Elementar Skola, its current name being adopted in 1876. It currently offers its students over 70 programs of study with 75 majors in 24 academic departments and three interdisciplinary programs, being currently ranked among the best 100 national liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report.
The athletic teams at Gustavus Adolphus College are known as the Golden Gusties and they compete in NCAA Division III, in MIAC, ELCA. Their distinctive colors are black and gold and their mascot is `Gus`, the Lion.
